No more lightning strikes on outdoor surveillance cameras!
Outdoor surveillance cameras are installed on poles which are mostly made of metal and carry a huge risk of being struck by lightning.
During a storm, when there is no lightning protection on these poles, ground charges climb up on the pole since that they are attracted by the opposite charges of the storm cloud. As the storm reaches to a certain level of development, all ground charges at the top of the pole are emitted towards the oppositely charged downward streamers of the cloud.
The meet of the upward charges with the downward streamers develop the lightning channel. Lightning current flows through this channel, hits the pole and reaches to ground. During this flow, lightning current damages the cameras on the pole, damages the transmitter and breaks down the link between transmission unit and control room. As a result; all data during and after this incident are lost untill the maintanence date and also cameras and transmission units must be renewed.
There is definitely a need of lightning protection for cameras.
Lightning Rods? (Are you sure?)
Security and traffic control camera poles are made of conductive material and they are the highest structures around. This makes the poles open to lightning threat and they need to be protected against lightning strikes and possible damages.
In case of use of a lightning arrester solution, the arrester collects all ground charges on itself and emit them towards the cloud charges in order to “protect” the surrounding area which is exactly their purpose of use.
However, lightning current must reach the ground through the shortest and fastest way which is still the camera pole body. Eventhough a conductor cable is installed between lightning arrester and grounding system, lightning current prefers to follow larger surfaces instead of a conductor cable and flows through surface of the pole.
In this case, using a lightning arrester does not solve the problem and all devices on camera pole are still affected by lightning current and all data is still under risk of getting lost.
As a result, there is no difference between protecting camera poles with a lightning arrester and leaving the pole unprotected against lightning strikes.
Lightning must be kept away from camera poles!
EvoDis® Lightning Prevention System
EvoDis® Lightning Prevention System dissipates ground charges on camera pole through thousands of tiny sharp points and blocks the formation of an upward streamer. This process makes the pole “invisible” to lightning and prevents a possible strike on it.
EvoDis® System is the only lightning protection solution which keeps the lightning strikes away from camera poles. EvoDis® System has been protecting hundreds of camera poles worldwide with 100% success for the past 10+ years.
